PRESIDENT'S REPORT

6.1

Report:

Good evening ladies and gentlemen and well come to the 28th BIDP AGM.

I would like to thank you all for attending in sufficient numbers to form a quorum.

Firstly, I would like to thank all council members for their input in the running of the Institution some of them have gone the extra mile for BIDP work gets done. I would also like to thank the general members for their support during out tenure in office. Special thanks to Mr Moapare, Mr Khin and of course Mr Okumbe for the various assistance of 3 news letters.

We have had a number of activities this year, both social and professional. Those of you who visit the Website would know about these. I will not be able to mention all these tonight, but I will mention just a few.

Participation in adoption of South African building Regulations of BOBS, where we are presented by Mr Moapare. This activity is currently on hold as you might have picked from the latest newsletter.

We have a Champagne breakfast at the Yacht Club in May/April where we had Mr Farley of DBES as a guest of honour. At the event, Mr Hutchings did a painting for BIDP, which was issued/handed to Mr Farley at a function which was held at the Bull & Bush last week.

Have been invited by JCI for the Launch of the outstanding young person of the year which I attended with Mr Nyame. We were requested to submit names of possible candidates, but we did not get any from our members. This is an annual event, hopefully starting next year will be able to submit at least one. Please note that they define young people as everyone less than 40.

Reaching out to other organizations

The council this year has made an effort to have links with other professional bodies. We have written to some of them to arrange for meetings to discuss possible formal links with them. Although these meetings have not taken place yet, we have had some of them participating in our activities. We are hopeful that the incoming council members will take this matter further.

Affiliation to the CAA has been taken over by AAB, who have more Architect members. It is CAA policy that the professional body with most architects members among other requirements be the one that represents the country at CAA.

Challenges:

Current Government Procurement system.

Does BIDP need a patron?

The need for a focal person representing the construction area. BOCCIM no liaising well, K Palalani said. Firms not involved as often as organisations. G Vlug anticipate. Needs to be outstanding of character with potential assistance to BIDP. Possible to new council. Defined that no patron wanted at present. Patron for an even might be valid.

Check directory includes / mission statement aims etc.

Thanks to executive secretary.

K Palalani proposes more specifics in BIDP contracts.

U Soderstrom: Too many discrepancies between contractual relations.

Need to take action on issues of consultancy services procurement. Eliminate irrational / unreasonable procedures. K Palalani: tactics since tenders have not worked in 5 years.

L Hutchings regarding BOCCIM addressing issues.

G Vlug state can not bid on consultancy work.

No resolution of this urgent matter.
